Scammers Target Loyalty Programs With Fake SMS

A new scam targeting customers of loyalty points programs with well-known Australian companies has raised concerns about consumer safety. The National Anti-Scam Centre has issued a warning about this text message scam, which specifically targets Qantas Frequent Flyer, Telstra, and Coles loyalty programs. Over the past four months, Scamwatch has received 209 reports related to this scam.

The scam works by sending consumers a text message or email claiming that their loyalty points are about to expire. The message includes a link to a fake website where customers are prompted to log in and may be asked to provide credit card details to use their loyalty points.

Scammers not only steal customers’ points but also their login credentials and personal information, which can be used for identity fraud on other platforms.

To protect yourself, it is important not to click on any links included in these text messages. Instead, access the official app or website independently to check the status of your points. The National Anti-Scam Centre has taken action by contacting the affected companies and working with web host providers to shut down the fake websites.
