Beware of myGov Email Scams

Stay Alert Against Phishing Threats

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and Services Australia are urging citizens to remain cautious in response to a surge in phishing scams that cunningly mimic official government communications.

These fraudulent schemes are primarily targeting myGov users, exploiting their trust to hijack sensitive account information.

Throughout February, the most frequently reported scams involved emails masquerading as official ATO communications. These deceitful emails commonly included links directing unsuspecting recipients to counterfeit myGov login pages. Shockingly, approximately three-quarters of all email scams reported to the ATO over the last six months involved these bogus myGov portals.

The primary objective of these scams is to harvest login credentials. Once scammers gain access to a myGov account, they can initiate unauthorized transactions or alter banking details, rerouting legitimate payments into their own accounts.

Scammers employ a variety of deceptive phrases to entice individuals into clicking on malicious links. Some of the commonly used tactics include:

  • “You are due to receive an ATO Direct refund”
  • “You have a new message in your myGov inbox – click here to view”
  • “You need to update your details to allow your Tax return to be processed”
  • “We need to verify your incoming tax deposit”
  • “ATO Refund failed due to incorrect BSB/Account number”
  • “Your income statement is ready, click on the link to view”

As these threats continue to evolve, it is crucial for everyone to remain vigilant and verify any communications claiming to be from government agencies. Remember, official bodies will never request sensitive information through email or direct you to click on links to verify account details.

If you receive such communications, it is advisable to contact the respective agency directly using official contact details to confirm its authenticity. Stay informed and protect your personal information from these malicious actors.
